AP US Government and Politics: Campaign Finance Reform

After watching the "Big Sky, Big Money" Documentary and reading the article, "What's the Future for Campaign Finance Reform" I think it is necessary to create a campaign finance reform. In order to be a good candidate, you must have ideas that appeal to the people and be able to communicate them to the county. It is important to advertise these ideas during a campaign, however, Bob Biersack, a Center for Responsive Politics employee says, "The pressure of big outside money forced candidates to spend more time fundraising on their own in order to compete, instead of focusing on the issues." If candidates only worry about making ads that make themselves look good or make others look bad, there is no time to focus on the issues. The candidates are more focused on who receives the most money to create the most commercials instead of who has the best ideas to help the country. That's why some finance reforms are necessary. Without some limits it would just be a continuous race for who could raise the most money the fastest and produce the most commercials and advertisements. Also, without limits the entire government would be run by the wealthy instead of the country as a whole. The lower-middle class would have no control of government because they would not be able to contribute to the campaigns as much as the rich. If this were so, the government would be run exactly as the founding fathers did not want. A reform is needed to ensure this does not happen. The best idea in the article was to attract smaller donations to welcome more people to donate. Even though the richer minorities will always be the ones to donate the most, by encouraging the majority of the population to contribute allows for more say in the government from a larger amount of people. Even though the rich will always find ways to contribute the most money, it is still necessary for the less rich to donate in order to have the country run smoothly.
