Campaign Finance Reform

After watching the "Big Sky, Big Money" Documentary and reading the article, "What's the Future for Campaign Finance Reform" I think it is necessary to create a campaign finance reform. Of course, to be a good candidate you must appeal to the nation and advertise your ideas, but there is a line that must not be crossed. Bob Biersack, a Center for Responsive Politics employee, mentions this when he says, "The pressure of big outside money forced candidates to spend more time fundraising on their own in order to compete, instead of focusing on the issues." He is saying that this line is crossed when a candidate focuses too much on making them look better than the other candidate and with this; there is no time to focus on issues. This can become a problem because while one candidate may seem as though he is a good candidate, the truth is that he is the one receiving the most money to make him look that way. This is why we need campaign finance reform. If we were to let individuals, corporations, unions, etc. contribute without limits, campaigning would not be focused on the people and what the candidates want to do when they are in office and instead be filled with candidates making empty promises to appeal the majority of the population. Also, these wealthy people would be the ones running our government instead of the majority of the people; it would not be a pure democracy, exactly the opposite of what the Constitution was made to do. The most reasonable idea in the article was to attract small donors. Not only would this prevent the rich, minorities from taking control of the government, but it would also be more suitable for the majority of the population. More people would be able to contribute so the nation would be able to see clearly who has the majority. This would also allow more people to donate because they won’t feel obligated to donate large amounts of money; instead this would be more affordable. Although these wealthy groups will almost always find a loophole to donate money, attracting small donors would be the best choice for us, as a nation, to make sure that minority does not take control of our government.
