Campaign Finance Reform

Based on the video we watched,"Big Sky, Big Money", and the article that we read by Azmat Khan,"What's the Future for Campaign Finance Reform?", I believe that campaign reform needs to be enacted as soon as possible. The voice of the people needs to be heard in elections but for a while, the only voice being heard is that of the major corporations of America and those with large sums of money. Unfortunately, the voice of an average American is no longer equal to everyone. Money has become power and free speech, and the average citizen can no longer compete in the fight over equal voice when they can't afford it. Also, in modern times, the candidates no longer focus on the major issues or what the people want. All these future legislators focus on is which corporation they need to please in order to receive support in the form of funds to win. The voice of the people is no longer present and becomes a distant memory.Candidates also now have two faces. The face we see is the one that will appeal to us while the other is his or her true face. This true face is what a candidate really thinks and the face we see is what the money creates. The candidates for politics we have now can't be trusted because the money that is given corrupts them and eradicates their concern for their constituents' issues. The political system today is exactly what the Founding Fathers didn't want. The Constitution is supposed to level the playing field in elections and now, the people with the most wealth are way above the normal citizen. The best ideas that the article proposed was to regulate the regulators and to attract small donors to the candidates. These ideas will ensure that the rules are being followed so that not only will ineffective laws be fixed, but the voice of the people will return. If more people donate, then their voice can be heard by who they donate to if money is truly free speech. Unfortunately, America is in a political mess, and the only way to fix it is to introduce major campaign finance reform so that the voice of democracy can be returned to the people and the money that is given to candidates for office is not the main goal, but the passing of legislation to help the people is.
