You see, the McConnell campaign posted a "campaign ad" to YouTube, but it was no ordinary ad. It contained no words or message, instead it was just raw footage of McConnell doing campain-y stuff. Why post such a video you ask? Well, as we already know, the McConnell campaign cannot directly communicate with SuperPacs, 527s, and 501(c)4 groups who were attempting to help his re-election bid. So, his campaign put this video up as a way to give these groups footage to use in their own ads while also assuring themselves plausible deniability that they were participating in illegal communications.
The McConnell campaign, however, failed to realize that YouTube is a public website that everyone can see. Therefore, this ad can be seen (and edited) by anyone including Jon Stewart, The Daily Show staff, and AP Government students! So in honor of our study of campaign financing I am offering extra credit to anyone who creates their own parody of this ad and posts it to the blog. (Please remember to keep the parody appropriate for school and our public blog!)
